The Attempt of Social Roles Typology of Speech Genres, Summary

The Attempt of Social Roles Typology of Speech Genres

In the article "The Attempt of Social Roles Typology of Speech Genres" by Krysin N.P., the author suggests an attempt to link the theory of role structure of the human behaviour to different speech genres.
First, the author gives the definition of social roles, defining them as "a set of role expectations". He then proceeds to give the definition of speech genre, stressing that they have many connection points with social roles. He elaborates that speech acts are defined, just as social roles, by the principle of recurrence. Furthermore, he states that the most typical way of communicating and exercising your social role is to create social roles pairs. The author then proposes a system of interrelation of social roles and speech genres, differentiating them into symmetrical and asymmetrical. Ultimately, what Krysin N.P. is trying to convey through his article is that social role structure may and should be linked to the theory of speech genres.
I have chosen this article because it is directly related to the research I am conducting for my course paper, which has to do with Sociolinguistics, Linguostylistics and Pragmatics.
After reading this article, a few questions sprung up in my mind.
1) What are the means of reflecting the proposed social roles in speech?
2) Is there any data confirming the proposed classification of social roles?

3) What are the next steps in developing the theory of Social Roles related to speech genres?

  1. Andrey, the article you have chosen is quite curious. I have heard about Krysin N.P. before, but did not know this work before. You said it is related to the research for your course paper, what is the name of it? What are symmetrical and assymetrical speech genres?

    1. Anna, what do you mean by "curious" here? The thing is that you can say that you are curious about smth., that is you would like to learn more about it. But I am afraid it's not quite right to refer to the article content as being "curious". You can say that it is "intriguing" or thought-provoking", for example. You can also check a list of possible synonyms appropriate in this case at

  3. Content:
the summary provides the essential information about the mainis points of the article and is well organised. What is your main
    takeaway from reading it?
    Language:
Can you clarify what you mean by "the author" suggests an attempt to link"?
    social roles pairs(?)
interrelation **of (prep) social roles and speech genres

    1. My main takeaway would be the ground basis for further research, a glimpse of what will be researched later.
      1) "The author suggests an attempt to link" means that this is not an actual research, just a few thoughts on what might be expected in the following years of research.
      2) By "social roles pairs" I meant the pair of speakers that have two different roles. I now understand that it seems a bit wacky.
